Sidewalk Sunday School

Sidewalk Sunday School utilizes the Metro Ministry model to bring Sunday School lessons to  children  in some of the darkest and least expected places of our community. Our programs happen in communities where people live and do life. We bring church to children and encourage them to be connected to the local church.

What to Expect

Seasons

Our programs typically range from 8 to 14 weeks long. We have three semesters throughout the year:

  1. Spring Semester
  2. Summer Semester
  3. Fall Semester

Duration

Our programs themselves last about 1 1/2 hours. With a meal and fellowship afterwards we allocate two hours. This time does not include set up or tear down.

Prayer

Prayer is fundamental to what we do and therefore we incorporate prayer from the beginning to the end of our program. Children are taught the importance of prayer and as we pray they witness God's faithfulness as He responds.

Game Time

Every week children have opportunity to participate in The Games where boys compete against girls. Leaders for the games are chosen based on the children's ability to answer review questions from the previous weeks lessons. Games often encourage and teach children to collaborate together as they work in teams.

Giving Lesson

When talking about giving we're not only talking about finances. Giving encompasses everything from time to talents and treasures. Children are taught the principle of stewardship. God simply allows us to be managers of what He provides.

Worship

Children learn to worship and praise Jesus right where they are. Worship happens within the church but it should happen throughout our daily lives. Some of the ways we teach them how to do that is through singing and dance.

Preaching of God's Word

There's a time to have fun and there's a time to be serious. The preaching of God's Word is the most important aspect of what we do. We take children through the Bible and teach them how everything it says is pertinent to life today and prepares us for the life to come.

Object Lessons

Object lessons are used to reinforce the message being taught. They are simply illustrations that help put into perspective the main point we want children to remember about God's word.

Meals with Children

We offer spiritual nourishment for the soul as we study God's word but the physical body also needs nourishment. Every week we provide a free meal for the kids, their families, and anyone else who may come after our program.

Frequency Asked Questions

Can I bring my children and family?

Absolutely! Kids and families are encouraged to come along. We have several volunteers who bring their kids with them every week.

Do I need to bring anything?

There's no requirement to bring anything. Regular volunteers are required to wear Sidewalk Sunday School t-shirts.

What happens if it's raining?

Most of our programming happens on Saturdays. When raining our program is moved to Sunday. In the event it rains both days we will do visitations instead of our regular program. During visitations we'll visit all the kids on our roster, pray with them, and encourage them to come the following week.

What time should I show up?

We typically show up one hour before our program starts to set up and visit children in the community.
